Breast Reduction

While it may offer improvement in appearance, breast reduction is a medically indicated procedure that offers a number of health benefits. Women with excessively large breasts can experience a number of medical problems such back, neck, and shoulder pain. Skin irritation and breathing problems are also common complaints associated with large breasts. Breast reduction is performed to relieve these many uncomfortable symptoms.

Reduction mammaplasty (breast reduction) is essentially the removal of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin with repositioning of the nipples. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and the patient typically stays overnight in the hospital.

Most patients do not experience significant discomfort with this procedure since the chest muscles are not tampered with. Low intensity activities may be performed a day or two after surgery, based on the individual. Heavy lifting or strenuous activities should be avoided for six weeks following surgery.
